Joel Popadics
Joel Popadics has been teaching drawing and watercolor for more than three decades, sharing his passion for traditional painting and the art of capturing light, mood, and atmosphere. Known for his clear, encouraging approach, Joel makes watercolor—often called “the master’s medium”—accessible and enjoyable for artists of all levels. His classes combine individualized instruction with weekly demonstrations that inspire and guide his students.
A lifelong advocate for watercolor, Joel has dedicated his career to elevating and celebrating the medium. He is President of the American Watercolor Society (AWS), a Past President of the New Jersey Water Color Society (NJWCS), and a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA). His work has been honored with numerous awards, including the Grumbacher Gold Medal from the California Watercolor Association and the Silver Medal of Honor from the NJWCS. His paintings and expertise have been featured in American Artist, The Artist’s Magazine, Watercolor Artist, and Watercolor Magic.
In addition to teaching, Joel conducts workshops nationwide. He has served as Artist-in-Residence at Shelburne Farms in Vermont, where he also leads a popular weeklong summer workshop with the Shelburne Craft School. He has lectured at Parsons School of Design, taught as an adjunct professor at The King’s College in New York City, and continues to share his expertise with students across the country.
A graduate of the School of Visual Arts in New York City, Joel began his career as an assistant to illustrator and watercolorist James McMullan, whose influence shaped his own approach to the medium. He went on to study landscape and portrait painting with John Phillip Osborne and Arthur F. Maynard.
Joel’s paintings have been exhibited widely, including solo shows and group exhibitions at the National Academy and the Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport, among other distinguished venues. His watercolors are held in exclusive private and public collections nationwide.
